GIRLS own the VOID // ALLOVER PRINT CREW
Before she was a pop-culture mainstay, Betty Boop was a flashpoint for controversy and a symbol of jazz-age defiance. Created by Max Fleischer in 1930, she wasn't actually human at first, she debuted as a French poodle before evolving into the wide-eyed flapper we recognize today.
Betty was the first truly feminine animated star who possessed a clear sense of self-reliance. While other characters of the era were often damsels in distress, Betty was navigating the urban grit of the Great Depression with a sultry, playful edge that eventually drew the ire of the strict Hays Code censors. By the mid-1930s, her hemlines were forced lower and her persona "toned down," but her original spirit of independent, street-smart energy remained.
