The jack-o’-lantern started with a guy who was allegedly such a pain in the ass that neither Heaven nor Hell wanted him.
According to the Irish legend of Stingy Jack, he repeatedly tricked the Devil, died, got rejected from both destinations, and was left wandering the earth with a burning coal inside a carved turnip. That story became associated with the jack-o’-lantern tradition. Pumpkins came later in America because they were bigger and considerably less miserable to carve.
So this is basically the face of a man permanently banned from the afterlife.
